I've read that windows update will check your computer to see if it is compatible with Vista SP1 before it installs SP1. What is unclear is, if you are using WSUS and you release SP1 for installation, will it do that compatibility check or will it just install SP1 on everything that has Vista?
The whitepapers don't specifically mention the compatibility checks with respect to WSUS. Thanks for any help you can provide. When distributed via WSUS 3. Anyway, thanks for your input and everything here has been backed up by the product group.
There was a prerequisite update or two released a few months back. The prerequisite updates must be installed in order to install SP1. As far as I understand the situation, the detection logic for SP1 requires those prerequisites and SP1 will not even detect as "Needed" unless they're installed. If they are and if they approve the SP1, they may encounter problems.
Yes, install Microsoft Download Manager recommended No, thanks. What happens if I don't install a download manager? Why should I install the Microsoft Download Manager? In this case, you will have to download the files individually. You would have the opportunity to download individual files on the "Thank you for downloading" page after completing your download. Files larger than 1 GB may take much longer to download and might not download correctly.
You might not be able to pause the active downloads or resume downloads that have failed. Back Next. Details Version:. File Name:. Date Published:. Most of these drivers are listed in Knowledge Base article I was surprised to discover in my testing that Windows Update was not offering SP1 to one Vista workstation. It turns out that this three-month-old HP workstation had an offending Realtek audio driver.
After I installed an updated audio driver, the machine was then offered Vista Service Pack 1. As you know from reading my previous columns, I normally say "no" to installing modified device drivers using Windows Update.
It's usually much more reliable to get the latest version from the manufacturer's site. But in this case, I said "yes" to installing the audio driver via Windows Update. Without the updated drive in place, the service pack wasn't even appearing in Windows Update's list, much less installing properly. If you don't see Vista Service Pack 1 in the list of available updates when you run Windows Update manually, and you aren't offered any audio drivers, there may be other hardware issues.
Cheers firewolfrl, finally got at least a partial answer. It seems I have an old version of Sigmatel audio driver stwrt. Trying Sigmatel's website Steve: N. Thanks firewolfrl! Mine was the video driver Lovely catch Guess SP1 will have to wait. Not good for me either as Sigmatel have sold their Audio division to someone who isn't supporting it!!!
I have an e-mail in to Susan Bradley from windows secrets. Digging around on the web I can see that Dell and even Sony Vios also have this problem.
Can anyone confirm that? You can identify if your desktop model uses an Intel motherboard by navigating to your desktop model's webpage from the Gateway support page. Ok thats great, downloaded driver stwrt. Have to try it now? Will just updating the driver assuming at this point that it will be accepted , get Windows Update to work? I have seen suggestions that that alone wont be enough, and perhaps taking off the old driver before the update and installing the new one after the update is done is the way to go?
Alternativly wait for Wave 1 April? If either the prerequisite Windows Updates haven't been done or Update detects an incompatible driver, SP1 will not offered. Regards: tf1.
